With the summer holidays in full swing, the RSPCA has issued important reminders for pet owners to ensure their furry friends remain safe and comfortable during the warmer months.
Consider Travel Plans
If you plan to travel with your pets, ensure your destination is pet-friendly. During travel, ensure your pet's comfort with proper ventilation and frequent water breaks. Use pet-friendly travel carriers to restrain your pet legally and avoid travelling during the hottest parts of the day.
When taking your dog on holiday, pack essentials such as a collar with an ID tag, lead, cosy bed, toys, chews, poo bags, food, treats, and a towel for muddy paws. If travelling abroad, ensure all necessary paperwork is ready.
If leaving your pet at home, start planning immediately. Arrange for a friend, relative, or boarding facility to care for your pet. Visit the facility beforehand to ensure satisfaction with their care and book an overnight stay for your pet to acclimate them to the new environment.
Provide Fresh Water
Always provide your pets with access to fresh, clean water. Hydration is crucial in hot weather, so consider placing multiple water bowls around your home and garden.
Create Shaded Spaces
Ensure your pets have shaded areas to rest. These can be under trees, canopies, or inside cool rooms. Never leave pets in direct sunlight for extended periods. For pets that usually live outside, such as rabbits, create a cool area away from direct sunlight.
Never Leave Pets in Hot Cars
Temperatures inside cars can rise rapidly, even with windows slightly open. Leaving pets in hot cars can lead to heatstroke and be potentially fatal. Always take your pets with you or leave them safely at home.
Be Mindful of Hot Pavements
Hot pavement can burn your pet's paws. Check the ground temperature with your hand before walks and opt for early morning or late evening strolls when it’s cooler.
Watch for Signs of Heatstroke
Symptoms of heatstroke in pets include excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, and collapse. If you suspect heatstroke, move your pet to a cool area, provide water, and seek veterinary attention immediately.
By following these essential tips, pet owners can ensure their pets remain safe, healthy, and happy during the summer holidays.
