How to choose a sofa that will actually survive your pets

How to choose a sofa that will actually survive your pets

A recent survey found that around a third of pet owners have had to replace a household item such as a sofa, rug or soft furnishing due to pet-related damage in the last two years. At the same time, Google searches for “best sofa for dog owners” have increased by +67%, highlighting the shift towards more pet-resilient interiors.

To help homeowners find the perfect balance between comfort, durability and design, Magdalena Gierasinska, Head of Product and Design at Barker and Stonehouse, shares her expert advice on creating a stylish home that works for both you and your pet.

Embrace pet-inclusive environments

The modern home celebrates cosy, shared spaces where pets are welcome to curl up alongside their owners, and the best interiors embrace this reality with style.

Magdalena says, “Don’t hide the fact that your pets are part of the family, celebrate it. Choose sofas that are big enough to stretch out on with your dog or cat beside you, and layer with cushions and throws in textures you don’t mind sharing.”

For a lived-in, relaxed feel, Magdalena suggests curating a soft corner in the home where your pet naturally gravitates. “Low armchairs, boucle textures, or a soft rug under a sunny window can become a shared space without disrupting the overall flow of the room.”

Durable materials are your friend

Fabrics matter more than ever in a pet-inclusive home. Scratch-resistant, tightly woven upholstery is key, and it doesn’t mean compromising on style.

“Look for performance fabrics that offer both texture and toughness,” advises Magdalena. “Microfibre is a brilliant option for pet households as it resists scratching and is easy to wipe clean. Velvet might surprise people, but it’s actually very good for repelling pet hair, just make sure it’s a high-quality polyester blend.”

Magdalena also recommends avoiding loose weaves like linen or tweed, which can snag easily. “Think practical, but don’t shy away from elegance. Microfibre and velvet are beautiful options that tick both boxes.”

Use neutral and forgiving colour palettes

Forget pale, high-maintenance fabrics, modern pet-friendly sofas make a statement while also cleverly disguising fur and minor stains.

“Mid-tones like charcoal, taupe, navy and olive green work brilliantly for busy, pet-filled households,” Magdalena explains. “They’re timeless, on-trend, and help conceal everyday wear without needing constant upkeep.”

She also recommends subtle patterns or textures to mask marks and hair. “A gentle herringbone or basket weave adds interest and is far more forgiving than a flat, pale fabric.”

The importance of protective features and low-maintenance styling

Keeping your space pet-friendly doesn’t mean compromising on style. It’s all about layering clever, intentional details.

“Think removable, washable and beautiful,” says Magdalena. “A neatly draped throw or a set of machine-washable cushion covers not only protect your sofa but also help create a curated, cohesive look.”

Magdalena also suggests planning in practical flooring and nearby storage. “Opt for vacuum-friendly flooring like wood or laminate, and keep a lidded basket near the sofa for toys, blankets or leashes, so everything has a place when you tidy up.”
