As local elections em-bark across the country, Britain's canines have been fulfilling their democratic duty by escorting their beloved owners to the polling booths. In doing so, a multitude of pictures depicting posing pooches were unleashed across Instagram and Twitter.

A spokesman for the electoral commission said there were no strict guidelines as to the role of dogs at polling stations. Of course, both guide and support dogs have always been allowed to accompany their owner in casting their ballot.

However, it’s usually down to the local voting administrators as to whether pets should be allowed inside of the polling station or if they must be securely tied up outside.

Dogs weren’t the only ones getting involved in the democratic process; a handful of cats were also out in force to express their political concerns – as well as the odd one or two overseeing postal votes from home!
